Supporting Children with Disabilities

One of the newest programs of NKF is support to children living with disability. At Northern Kenya Fund (NKF), we are committed to educating students through high school. However, we have identified a particular vulnerable group that is often overlooked: children with disabilities.  In Northern Kenya, children with disabilities are tragically often killed at birth by traditional birth attendants. This grim reality is compounded by the already difficult living conditions faced by community members, leading to the perception that a child with a disability would further burden their lives

Currently, only one in six children with disabilities in Kenya attend school. The majority are kept at home, isolated from their communities, and denied a normal childhood due to stigma and a severe lack of adequate facilities. Even those who do attend school often encounter discrimination, bullying, unsuitable curricula, poorly equipped classrooms, and staff who are not sufficiently trained in special educational needs.

To combat this, NKF has partnered with the Kalaca Catholic Church to support 13 of these children. While the church covers their transport, food, and other essential requirements, NKF is committed to ensuring their school fees are paid. We believe that every child deserves access to education and the opportunity to thrive.
