Susan Sora Shine

When Susan Sora Shine was 7 years old, her community was raided by cattle rustlers, killing her father and leaving her mother as a single parent to raise Susan and her siblings. Although Susan was a top student, University fees were out of her mother’s reach.

This is when NKF stepped in. Susan’s ambission coupled with a partnership with NKF has led her to be the first girl in her village to ever earn a college degree. Susan devoted herself to Peace and Conflict Resolution studies, going on to work for the Marsabit County Government. Susan is now a role model for other local girls and has transformed her family’s lives, now able to send her younger siblings and her children to earn their own educations.

Today, in Susan’s professional work, she creates community ties through planning cultural festivals, empowers women through educating them on their rights, and works to eradicate FGM (female genital mutilation).
